Frequently Asked Questions
Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version 3 became generally available on Wednesday, October 14th, 2020. See the following FAQs for some important points about the major changes in this release.
What are the main improvements in version 3 of the Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent)?
The Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) uses a multi-process architecture which integrates diverse technologies as appropriate. Some of these solutions depend on the Python runtime, which we’ve now upgraded to version 3.8 as part of the new version release. This brings several benefits with it, such as upgrading the OpenSSL software library to version 1.1, leveraging other new libraries, and upgrading several dependencies. This also allows for performance improvements and security fixes.
Upgrading to OpenSSL version 1.1 means that Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version 3 can now support Windows Surface Laptop 3 devices. Supporting these devices required us to update the OpenSSL version because Windows Surface Laptop 3 has an interoperability issue with OpenSSL version 1.0.
Do I need to make any changes in my environment to use version 3 of the Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent)?
No networking changes are required to ensure that the assets in your organization update to Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version 3. The update will be available automatically in the same manner as any other Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version update. This major version will start with version 3.0.1.
Does version 3 support the same operating systems of prior Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) versions?
Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version 3 won’t be available to assets still running any of the following operating systems or lower (due to interoperability issues between these operating system versions and Python 3.8):
- Windows Server 2003
- Windows XP
- Windows Vista SP1
- Windows 7 SP0
Will these unsupported operating systems still be able to use their existing Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent)?
Yes. The Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) will continue to work on these operating systems, however it will do so on the latest 2.x release (Rapid7 Agent (Insight Agent) version 2.7.22).Rapid7 Agents (Insight Agents) on these systems will still continue to receive the benefits of the latest security content analysis, as this is applied to the data after it is collected on the Command Platform (Insight Platform).
